Can you locate children with ChildLocate if the mobile phone is switched off?

The child's mobile phone needs to be switched on for ChildLocate to provide a real-time location on your child.
If the phone is switched off, then we will show you the last known location of the mobile handset if the handset is with the Vodafone, Orange or T-Mobile network. That would be the last time a call or text message was last received by or made from the mobile phone. No location information is provided by 02 if the phone is switched off.

Does the child need to agree every time I locate?

No, the child only agrees to being located when you set up the service initially. After that you can locate as you wish without the child needing to approve each time.

How accurate is the service?

Location accuracy varies depending on the operator and the whereabouts of the handset. As a guide please see listed below the expected accuracy:-

Vodafone T-Mobile Orange o2 (BT Cellnet)
Town 50-350 meters 400-600 meters 400-600 meters 600-900 meters
Country 350-550 meters 600-2000 meters 600-2000 meters 900-2500 meters

Can the child withdraw the parents permission to locate it?

For security reasons, the child is able to withdraw the users ability to locate it. This is done to help prevent an unauthorized person from using the service.

What do I need to use to the ChildLocate service?

You need the following:

  • Valid UK address
  • Mobile phone (optional)
  • Credit Card
  • Access to the internet

On which networks is the service available

We can currently locate children with mobile phones on Vodafone, o2, T-Mobile, Orange, Tesco Mobile, BT Mobile, Fresh, Easy Mobile and Virgin Mobile (service is not available on 3 network).

How do you prevent unauthorized people from tracking my children?

It is impossible for anyone to gain access to the service and locate your children without you knowing about it. As soon as an additional user gains access to the service you are notified on your mobile phone.

Am I charged if the location request is unsuccessful?

We will not charge you for the first two unsuccessful location attempts. We will charge you for further unsuccessful location attempts as we are charge every time by the mobile operators.

Notice

Location Services are designed to locate the phone of another person. For the service to work, the phone has to be switched on and within network coverage. Location services aimed at children are intended to complement, not be a substitute for, normal parental supervision. They give information about the location of a child's phone and, in conjunction with other types of communication, such as phoning or texting, can help parents keep in touch with their children.
